It is a much more grown-up flavor, I think ; the tragedies are indeed tragic, but they're not all explained so well. Having seen the first version does help a lot with understanding things with characters like Yoki, Nana, and Barry the Slasher... There are other characters which add interesting twists, like May and a much-expanded Armstrong's-older-sister and other exciting things with Hohenheim that I WILL NOT SPOIL SO HURRY UP AND WATCH MORE. While some arcs are just missing--like the mining town with "tuberculosis-like-disease", and the whole old-woman-in-the-house-in-the-woods thing...
Anyway, I think it's very exciting and the story seems much richer--so it's far less arc-like and episodic than the original ; just be prepared. And have a backlog of episodes on standby so you can watch through a particularly dramatic part (!!).
